Pennybyrn at Maryfield is committed to ensuring that each resident has access
to rehabilitation services aimed at helping a person maintain his or her highest
level of function and independence.
What once was an easy task may now prove difficult. Rehabilitation is a process
aimed at helping individuals learn to do more for themselves. We are here to encourage
and to teach people to use new techniques, specialized tools or equipment, to help
them take care of themselves. The rehabilitation personnel are experts in resolving
barriers that interfere with living the most fulfilling lifestyle.
Therapies Offered:
The result is a warm, friendly community, enhancing life for all involved. Where
days are meaningful, unlike anything you’ve seen in traditional health care.
Pennybyrn is comprised of three distinct neighborhoods—the Independent Living Neighborhood,
the Assisted Living Neighborhood and The Maryfield Health Care Households Neighborhood.
In addition, Home Care services are available.
PHYSICAL THERAPY
Physical Therapy is designed to re-educate muscles to work, to retrain other parts
of the body to function for those parts which cannot, and to teach clients how to
manage with their disability with or without equipment. This education process is
performed mainly through exercises and functional skill training. Our Physical Therapy
program concentrates on mobility in bed, in a wheelchair, or when walking. To accomplish
this, mobility training, pain management, strengthening and range of motion exercises,
and balance and coordination exercises, are performed. With exercises, various modalities
may be used, including electrical stimulation, ultrasound, biofeedback, heat and
cold.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
In Occupational Therapy the client works toward maximizing independence, whether
it be through re-learning to perform daily activities, or by instruction of others
to provide assistance in self-care activities. To accomplish this, self-care training,
pain management, strengthening and range-of-motion exercises and balance and coordination
exercises are performed. With exercises, various modalities may be used, including
electrical stimulation, ultrasound, biofeedback, heat and cold. The focus of Occupational
Therapy is to enable the person to pursue a fulfilling and productive life.
SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY
Speech-Language Pathologists diagnose and treat various types of communication,
swallowing and cognitive disorders. Both individual and group therapy are available
to address the individual treatment needs of each client. To accomplish improvement
in these areas, we provide language exercises, cognitive tasks, oral musculature
exercises, stimulation programs, and training of compensatory strategies for patients
and caregivers. The focus of Speech/Language Pathology is to enable the person to
pursue a fulfilling and productive life.
Specialized Programs
ADL Retraining
Our professionals will examine a person’s ability to perform basic
self-care tasks like bathing, dressing, and grooming. In addition, they can assess
a person’s ability to perform more complex tasks like housekeeping, cooking, and
money management. Following a thorough assessment, the therapist can develop a treatment
plan to focus on retraining of lost abilities and use of compensatory strategies
and equipment to achieve these tasks.
Dementia Management
For the complex person with dementia in all clinical settings, therapy team members
are qualified to identify the person’s highest level of function in all activities
and to develop maintenance plans to be implemented by the care team. Dementia Therapy
intervention has a direct impact on areas such as prevention of falls, weight loss,
behaviors, loss of ADL’s, and skin breakdown. High levels of activity and involvement
in activities of daily living along with a healthy self-esteem and self-worth produce
positive outcomes. Our personnel are specialists in the area of retraining and/or
developing compensatory strategies that allow the person suffering from dementia
to live the most fulfilling life.
Continence Management Program
Our Care Team approach includes a complete review of diet and medications and
an individualized exercise program to strengthen bladder support and control and
decrease leakage.
Safety in Motion Program
Our comprehensive evaluation will test vision, balance, strength and flexibility
during walking, turning, bending and reaching. Our treatment intervention techniques
include strengthening leg and trunk muscles, facilitating balance reactions, assessing
the use of assistive devices and precautionary strategies.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary approach to improving the functional
status and quality of life of people with chronic lung disease. Endurance and strength
training are the cornerstones. This includes patient education, instruction in various
respiratory techniques, and psychosocial support.
Pain Management
Stretching and strengthening the muscles surrounding painful joints can help reduce
chronic pain and improve joint movement and stability. The application of physical
agent modalities also may be used.
Physical Agent Modality Program
Pennybyrn at Maryfield offers a full spectrum of physical agent modalities to complement
our service delivery model. These modalities may assist the therapy professional
in managing a person’s pain, edema, tone, or movement.

function, cognition, positioning and food preferences to facilitate oral nutrition
and weight management.

impairments of age-related vision loss in cooperation with optometrists, ophthalmologists
and vision rehabilitation specialists. Intervention incorporates recommendations
for the home environment to include lighting, magnification and contrasting as well
as training for compensatory strategies.

Our team can assess each resident using a motorized vehicle for his or her
own safety and the safety of all community residents. The Occupational Therapist
will assess positioning, vision, speed control, reaction times and spatial awareness
skills as part of a comprehensive program to ensure the safety of all residents
as well as safeguard the physical plant.
